Het woke virus woekert wereldwijd. In Nederland holt men van incident naar rel. Er wordt er nauwelijks over de ideologische basis van het woke gedachtengoed gesproken. En die is ook verwarrend. Social Justice Warriors zijn de fakkeldragers van de woke ideologie die op zijn beurt weer de publieksversie is van de zogenaamde Kritische Theorie. Die is ooit begonnen als marxistische georiënteerde maatschappijkritiek van de Frankfurter Schule. Met een scheut Frans postmodernisme heeft het de laatste decennia op de Amerikaanse universiteiten een enorme opmars gemaakt en is nu weer teruggewaaid naar Europa.
Woke verwijst naar de verrijzenis uit de duisternis, het ontwaken uit de sluimertoestand van het ‘verkeerde bewustzijn’. Dit is weer een centraal idee uit het Marxisme. De woke ideologie is een mengeling van neo-Marxisme en postmodernisme, maar dan op steroïden. Volgens het gematigde postmodernisme zijn waarheid en objectiviteit problematische begrippen omdat ieder mens de zaken vanuit zijn perspectief ziet. Dit is op zich waar, maar natuurlijk stemmen bepaalde uitspraken meer overeen met de werkelijkheid dan anderen. In de het woke denken gaat men een flinke stap verder. Objectiviteit is radicaal afgeschaft. Alle kennis is relatief. Natuurwetenschappelijk uitspraken zijn nooit objectief, omdat ze verschillen in macht vertegenwoordigen. Het streven naar waarheid is zelfs fout omdat het een uitdrukking is van een machtsrelatie.

Before I got involved in studying Critical Social Justice like I do now, I mostly studied the psychology of religion. I took particular interest in the more authoritarian and cultish elements that can spring up within otherwise more reasonable faith traditions. Cult indoctrinations, in particular, tend to follow very predictable stages. First, there is initiation; then there is indoctrination; and then there is reprogramming. These three phases are distinct and must be understood on their own terms.
I. Cult Initiation
One thing I learned through all that study is that most fundamentalist religious (in the colloquial, not technical sense) and cult conversions, especially in adults, occur by using doctrine to resolve some core emotional vulnerability. That is, cult doctrine, and I include extreme fundamentalist interpretations of religious doctrines as cultish, exists to resolve a particularly powerful emotional vulnerability in an unhealthy way (this adds another layer of defense for responsible faith, which does so in a healthy way to the degree that it does the same things).
